Today, I'm delivering a special message to recent graduates, particularly from small towns like my hometown of Apple Creek, Ohio.
As you step into the next chapter of your lives, whether it's college, the military, or another path, remember that it's okay to come back home.
Today, I wanted to share a heartfelt message dedicated to recent graduates, especially those from small towns.
Growing up in the small town of Apple Creek, Ohio, I know firsthand the mix of excitement and uncertainty that comes with graduation. When I graduated, all I wanted was to leave my little town in the rearview mirror and never look back. Many of you might feel the same way, eager to explore the world and pursue new opportunities. Whether you're heading to college, joining the military, or embarking on another path, this message is for you.
In this episode, I emphasized a simple but important idea: Don't be afraid to come back home. Small towns need their graduates to thrive and grow. Reflect on the influential figures in your life β your teachers, ministers, doctors, and nurses β many of them left and returned, bringing their experiences and knowledge back to your community. They made a conscious decision to come back and contribute to the place that shaped them, and their return made a significant impact.
My journey took me away from Apple Creek for 20 years. With a journalism degree and limited local opportunities, I had to build a career before I could return. Today, with advancements in technology and endless possibilities, you can craft a career that allows you to come back home much sooner.
For parents reading this, I understand how hard it can be to let your children go. But trust me, letting them choose their own paths will always lead them back to you in some way. It's important to let them explore and find their way, knowing that home will always be a place they can return to.
To all the graduates, congratulations on your achievements! Embrace the world, explore every opportunity, and remember β if the path leads you back home, that's perfectly fine. Small towns need people like you to continue flourishing.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. I wish you all the success in your future endeavors.
